Pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides are very effective, but no single product controls
every weed. Some weeds are naturally resistant, while others are difficult because of their life
cycle.
Pre-emergents only stop new seeds from germinating. They do not kill existing weeds or weeds that spread by roots/rhizomes.
These include:
• Nutsedge (yellow and purple)
• Dallisgrass (poor control with most common pre-emergents)
• Bermuda grass (when it's invading another lawn)
• Johnsongrass (from rhizomes)
• Wild violet
• Creeping Charlie (ground ivy)
• Clover that is already established
• Virginia buttonweed
• Doveweed (many pre-emergents struggle)
• Bahiagrass (limited control)
These often require specialty herbicides or repeated treatments:
• Yellow nutsedge
• Purple nutsedge
• Dallisgrass
• Virginia buttonweed
• Doveweed
• Wild onion and wild garlic
• Bermudagrass growing in fescue
• Torpedograss
• Kyllinga
• Horsetail
• Poison ivy (needs specific brush killers)
• Woody vines (greenbrier, trumpet vine, etc.)
Most common broadleaf weeds respond well to standard post-emergents:
• Crabgrass (young plants)
• Chickweed
• Henbit
• Spurge
• Plantain
• Dandelion
• Clover
• Oxalis
• Purslane
Some of the toughest lawn weeds are:
• Yellow and purple nutsedge
• Dallisgrass
• Virginia buttonweed
• Doveweed
• Bermudagrass invading flower beds or fescue
These usually require targeted herbicides rather than a standard "weed and feed."
